Students of class 10th that are from CBSE-affiliated schools will not be evaluated at the end of the year board examination from 2010-2011. It has been declared by the HRD ministry. However, these students will now be evaluated by a system of continuous and comprehensive evaluation administered by schools. CBSE board will administer class 10th examinations for the last time in march 2010. Students, who want to appear in an external examination over and above the assessment by schools, can also do by availing of the examination on demand. For making education less stressful, schools that are affiliated to CBSE will introduce assessment system that is based on grades in place of marks from the examination March 2009.
The CBSE board has proposed a system of absolute grading. In this system, students will be evaluated on a nine-point scale basis that ranges from E2 (unsatisfactory) to A1 (exceptional). Along with grades, students will be given the equivalent grade point i.e. 10 for A1 (exceptional) and 4 for D (below average). CBSE will also provide a marks range. However, an A1 will indicate marks in the range of 91 to 100, while an E2 will indicate marks in the range of 0 to 20. Students will be graded for the March 2010 examination.
With the system of Class 10th board examinations coming to an end, now the schools will have to migrate to a system of continuous and comprehensive evaluation (CEE). This school based evaluation system will take into account all aspects of the development of a student. An academic year of 10th class will be divided into two terms i.e. from April to September and October to March. From October 2009, the CEE will be introduced at class IX level from October 2009. The CEE system will be introduced at the class IX level from October 2009. A continual assessment of students will mean assessing students from the beginning of the course (placement evaluation) and during the instructional process (formative process). This system will also cover the co-curricular activities, besides the core areas of subjects being studied in the classes.
