Using a potentiometer to compare EMFs relies on the 'driver cell' maintaining a constant pd acoss the wire throughout all the measurements - to maintain a constant potential gradient ('volts per metre') each time it is used for the comparison.to compare emf using potentiometer we intially plug in key 1 then key 2 is plugged in seperately , we get a balance point .. with lengths l1,l2 .. ratio of lengths corresponds to ratio of emf's
