The West Bengal Board of Secondary Education was established in 1951 under an Act of the State Legislature called the West Bengal Secondary Education Act of 1950. The Board was formerly known as Calcutta University and was renamed as West Bengal Board of Secondary Education in 1964. Main aims for the board are to regulate, control and develop Secondary education of the State and to conduct the School Final Examination. West Bengal Board of Secondary Education had 1270 high schools in 1951 under its flagship but by the end of 1975 the number rises to 8000 and presently the board is supervising 10238 schools. The West Bengal Board examinations of year 2009 for the Xth class were started from Tuesday, 17th of March and ended on Monday, 13th of April. The examinations were held on all week days except for Sundays. 12th examinations of West Bengal Board for year 2009 were started from Monday, 16th of March and culminated on Thursday, 16th of April.
